2. Silk Plaster® System
2.01 System
It is a proprietary system that provides an elegant and distinctive finish for interior architecture. Made with Endure Technology™, the product consists of an application system, formulas and materials, where a "like-new" look can be maintained for 20 plus years under any use conditions. It is applied by trowel in an efficient two, three or four step layering system. Its surface is softly luminescent and smooth, specifically designed to ensure virtually invisible easy repair and consistent quality even when using many craftsmen.
2.02 Materials
- Silk Plaster® is an extremely durable thin integral plaster. It is a high quality water- based acrylic plaster consisting of pigments, binders and additives. The ingredients and their combination are judged non-hazardous and considered proprietary. The source materials have been installed on interiors and exteriors for more than 25 years. Material combinations allow Silk Plaster® to be abuse resilient and virtually invisibly repairable. Being water-repelling, scrubbable and flexible, it is rated to perform in exterior conditions for 10 plus years. It can be installed in a wide range of natural, blended and pure colors. Materials conform to 16 CFR 1500.14 ASTM D-4236 and FHSA. Materials should be stored at normal temperatures (not to exceed 100 deg or less than 40 deg F). Properly stored materials have a proven shelf life exceeding 12 years. All material formulations are documented to ensure future replication.
2.03 Primers
Use only high performance primers that "lock-down" the substrate to ensure:
- The substrate is isolated from the migration of dust, releasing agents, loose material or any foreign matter from below
- Superior binding of Silk Plaster®
- No delaminating from materials applied to the Silk Plaster® surface (e.g. duct tape)
3. Installation
3.01 Environmental Conditions
- Apply finishes over substrates containing less than 14% moisture.
- Apply at a minimum of 41 deg. F (5 deg. C) ambient temperature for 8 hours before, during and after application.
- Protect from direct sun, extremes in temperature, wind, rain or other possible damage until the surface has set and dried.
- Ensure areas to be finished are well lit, ventilated or air conditioned as required.
- General contractor or owner to provide access to adequate electrical power and clean potable water.
3.02 Substrates
- The Silk Plaster® System is not designed to compensate lack of substrate integrity or surface imperfections.
- For interiors, suitable substrates include drywall, plaster and smooth cement-plaster. Drywall is to be finished to a good level 4 or 5(GA-214-96). It may also be finished to a flat, level 3 with low relief “skip-trowel”. Stable wood surfaces and existing painted surfaces may also be finished.
- Surfaces should be flat and true, free of any evidence of drywall joining that could ‘telescope’ through. All substrates are to be clean, dry and free of cracks, dust, plaster dust, loose material, paraffin, releasing agents, pollution buildup or any foreign matter.
- All edges adjoining other surfaces such as wood casing or stone baseboard are to be joined, finished, caulked and filled by others.
- Substrates to receive Silk Plaster® are to be provided in accordance with standard practice by work of other sections. Some substrates may be subject to special preparation before the work of this section is performed.
- Work by this section accepts no responsibility whatsoever for the structural integrity of any substrate. However, all substrates will be inspected for visible flaws prior to the work of this section. (see section 1.03
3.03 Protection
- Cover or mask surfaces adjacent to those receiving Silk Plaster® to protect work by other sections. Test areas with tapes before selecting tape to avoid delaminating of other surfaces.
- Mark finished or drying areas with signage to minimize damage by work of other sections.
- During application, any adjacent surfaces and work areas shall be cleaned of materials resulting from the work of this section.
- Erect barriers to prevent entry and presence of personnel not performing work of this section.
Part 4 Maintenance Program
4.01 Maintenance System
- We acknowledge the need for and the value-added of our wall maintenance program for customers. Silk Plaster®, Made with Endure Technology™ is truly in a class of its own offering virtually invisible easy repair of any damage whatsoever, to maintain a “like-new look” for many years.
- The maintenance program is dependent on the level of use and severity of expected damage. A program can be designed that fits each project. All original formulations and system applications are catalogued to ensure successful future repair.
- Repairs are virtually unnoticeable. If excessive use of an area is anticipated. Silk Plaster® installation can be designed at the outset to help accommodate future maintenance.
- Large installations receive complementary annual inspections for ordinary wear and tear.
